The Guardia Civil arrests two people in Lanzarote for a crime against public health, namely the cultivation and processing of drugs.

- The detainees lived in the house where the search and entry ordered by the Second Court of Arrecife took place.

- In the house they had all the tools they needed to grow, process and ultimately sell the drugs.

The Guardia Civil of Lanzarote arrested two people aged 31 and 41 on 14 February

Through citizen collaboration, the Guardia Civil became aware of a possible marijuana cultivation operation at a nursery in the municipality of Tahiche on December 3, 2024. Suspicion arose due to the strong odor emanating from the location. Agents from the investigative section of the Costa Teguise headquarters had to conduct investigations over several days and at various times to verify the accuracy of the information provided as a result of a routine inspection conducted by DEPRONA.

During the operation, which lasted almost three months, extensive surveillance was conducted, culminating in the discovery of a suspected cannabis plantation at its optimal harvesting location. For this reason, a search warrant was filed with the competent court, which was executed on February 14. The search warrant yielded 296 marijuana plants in various flowering stages weighing 36.277 kg, 393.3 grams of hashish, 69.2 kg of ready-to-use marijuana buds, 23.5 kg of marijuana mince, various drug-making tools such as heat lamps, drip systems, air extractors, etc., bladed weapons, a carbine, and €250 in cash.

The case, along with the detainees, was referred to the Juzgado de Instrucción No. 2 of Arrecife, and the detainees were released pending trial.

The Guardia Civil is investigating four people for the theft of approximately 5,616.507 kilograms of copper from telephone systems on Lanzarote.

The value of the stolen copper amounts to 18,253.65 euros.

The company employees took advantage of their condition to steal and sell it.

The Roca team of the Guardia Civil Command of Las Palmas, together with the investigative area of the main post of Costa Teguise, has begun an investigation against four people considered to be the alleged perpetrators of a continuous robbery involving violence during the dismantling of telephones.

The meticulous investigations of the Roca team of the Guardia Civil in the province of Las Palmas have led to the discovery of a major copper theft committed by subcontractors laying telephone cables in Lanzarote.

The action was triggered by a complaint filed on November 26, 2024, by two subcontractors of a telephone company. They reported the theft of approximately 5,616.507 kilograms of copper stolen from the construction sites. The value of this material amounts to the considerable sum of €18,253.65.

Thanks to thorough monitoring of sales at the province's various processing companies, Roca team agents were able to identify and confiscate 2,496 kilograms of copper that had been illegally sold by the companies involved. These individuals took advantage of the clearance operations to steal the material by exploiting their position.

The Guardia Civil confiscated 1,200 expired food items intended for sale.

The food establishment was already inspected in April 2024 for the same reason.

As part of measures to prevent and prosecute smuggling, fraud and other illegal activities, the Guardia Civil in Gran Canaria has carried out a visit to a grocery store that was already inspected in April 2024 and reported for possessing 5,794 expired items in poor condition.

The Tax and Border Police of Santa María de Guía, while carrying out their inspection and control functions to ensure compliance with regulations in commercial establishments, discovered a serious breach of regulations at a store in the city of Las Palmas. During the inspection, officers discovered that the establishment in question continued to offer products for sale that were clearly outdated and in an unhealthy condition.

Failure to comply with health standards poses an unacceptable risk to the health of consumers, who are exposed to possible poisoning and illness through the sale of these products.

The repetition of these negligent practices is evidence of a blatant disregard for consumer safety and health. A total of 1,200 items were seized and sealed, including vegetables, spices, canned soy, pasta, dried fruits and nuts, canned goods, milkshakes, snacks, cookies, etc., which were not labeled in Spanish.

For all these reasons, the Health Department of the Government of the Canary Islands was informed of the incident so that it could take appropriate measures in relation to the controlled premises, with a focus on recidivism.

According to Regulation No 852/2004 of the European Parliament, which regulates food hygiene, a fundamental objective of food law is to achieve a high level of protection of human life and health.

The Guardia Civil investigates 21 violent break-ins into vehicles in the north of Fuerteventura.

Two adults were arrested as suspected perpetrators of the robberies.

The detainees pretended to be a couple enjoying the nature park in order not to arouse suspicion.

In the municipality of La Oliva, 10 cases of robberies involving the use of force inside a vehicle were solved, and in the municipality of Antigua, another 11.

On February 7, the Fuerteventura Civil Guard arrested a man and a woman, both adults, known to the police and repeat offenders, residing in the municipality of Majorero in Puerto del Rosario, as alleged perpetrators of 21 crimes of theft by force inside a vehicle, for the theft from inside vehicles of personal clothing of the victims, sunglasses, computer equipment such as iPads, Airpods, mobile phones, removable fast-charging batteries and other objects of great economic value, all committed in the northern area of Fuerteventura.

Given the exponential increase in thefts involving force inside vehicles in the north of Fuerteventura, mainly affecting the municipalities of La Oliva and Antigua, and given the continuous monitoring of the island's criminal analysis, a series of investigations and coordinated actions have been initiated between the different units of the Fuerteventura Civil Guard.

These criminal acts took place in the Parque Natural Dunas de Corralejo, more specifically in the car parks along the FV 104 road between kilometres 14 and 24, as well as in the car parks of the natural swimming pools of Caleta de Fuste.

The modus operandi of the commission of these crimes, before the technical inspections, leaves no doubt that, in committing their crimes, they used a blunt element with a flat tip and a thin cylindrical body to first cut through the rubber of the glass or the protection of the door frame and then to create a leverage effect in order to generate the necessary opening force and allow the perpetrators manual access; and in most cases, this violent action resulted in the breaking of the glass of the vehicle window.

The vehicles involved in the crimes were mainly rental cars and, as established in the completed investigations, they pre-selected their victims by pretending to be another couple having fun in the area of the Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park or in the area of the natural pools of Caleta de Fuste, even interacting with the victims in this theatrical role.

They took photos of the area and each other to conceal their true motivation and to pose as another couple in the area. The perpetrators selected their victims, stalking them if they were carrying handbags or other valuables, and even discriminated against the age and gender of the victims to be apprehended, whether they were young or old.

The Civil Guard made full use of the resources available to the units involved and carried out coordinated surveillance in the places where the suspects frequented the area, as there was no immediate address where they could be found, as they moved around in different areas, in abandoned and dilapidated buildings in Puerto del Rosario and did not usually stay overnight in one place, which made the investigation to track them more difficult.

The extensive deployment of the Guardia Civil resulted in the perpetrators being caught red-handed on January 18, when they were surprised and violently fled from the officers, which was very dangerous for both the public and the officers, who suffered blows against the police vehicle.

The escape ended in the town of Puerto del Rosario, with both perpetrators on foot.

Costa Teguise Civil Guard catches 55 kg of fish in the La Graciosa Marine Reserve and on the islands in the north of Lanzarote

Three people are being investigated for a crime against flora and fauna.

On 11 February 2025, the Deprona Timanfaya Lanzarote began investigating three individuals for their alleged involvement in a crime against flora and fauna when they were caught poaching in the municipality of Haría.

Officers from the Costa Teguise main post discovered two individuals spearfishing in Caleta de Mero (Haría), located within the marine reserve. After leaving the marine environment, they were intercepted by officers. They were in possession of all the necessary fishing equipment, including wetsuits, fins, goggles, and spearguns, as well as catches of considerable value.

Deprona Timanfaya Lanzarote, the authority responsible for the conservation of protected areas, has initiated an investigation against the identified individuals.

For these reasons, they classified the matter as a suspected criminal offence and investigated both the two persons who carried out the underwater fishing and a third person who carried out surveillance work as suspected perpetrators of a

Crime against flora and fauna.

The confiscated catches were handed over to the non-governmental organization “Calor y Café” in the city of Arrecife against receipt.

An off-duty Romanian policewoman arrests two men after catching them stealing in the south of Tenerife.

One of the officers is a member of the Romanian National Police and is currently seconded to the island as part of the State Secretariat for Security's Safe Tourism Plan. The officers became suspicious of the suspects and were able to secure evidence while they were committing the crime.

A Civil Guard officer from the Las Américas headquarters, together with an officer of the Romanian National Police currently deployed in the south of the island of Tenerife as part of the Safe Tourism Plan of the Secretary of State for Security, observed, while off duty, two men aged 32 and 35 committing a theft by stealing the wallet from the backpack of a couple of tourists.

Due to the crimes they observed, they acted immediately and, after identifying themselves as officers of the authority, arrested the two suspects, seizing the sum of 300 euros and various documents that the victims were carrying.

Attached is a video recorded after the modus operandi that the two detainees intended to use to commit the crime was suspected.

The detainees were handed over to the National Police, as the crimes were committed within its jurisdiction, and were responsible for conducting the relevant proceedings and bringing them before the Court of Inquiry in Arona.

The captains of a Cayuco that arrived on the coast of the Canary Islands from Senegal and on which eight people died have been arrested

Seven people were arrested in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Madrid, León, and Almería. Among the dead are a 14-month-old baby and a 50-year-old father and his 18-year-old son.

The Guardia Civil has arrested seven captains who were piloting a cayuco that arrived at the port of La Restinga on El Hierro on December 28, 2024, with 224 people on board. Eight migrants died during the crossing. The boat had set off from the Senegalese island of Bassar seven days earlier.

Upon arriving on the Canary Islands coast, the migrants required immediate medical attention due to severe injuries, presumably sustained in an altercation during the crossing. Guardia Civil officers investigated the incident to determine the origin of the injuries and, after obtaining several statements from them, determined that, in addition to these 224 people, eight more people were supposed to have arrived and presumably died at the hands of the now-arrested boatmen.

Among the dead was a 14-month-old baby, a Gambian national who was traveling with his mother and uncle. Also among them were a father and son, aged 50 and 18, respectively, both of Guinean nationality. The Guardia Civil has already fully identified five of the eight victims and is working on identifying the others. The next of kin of four of the victims have already filed a complaint.

The arrests took place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Madrid, León, and Almería. The various judicial authorities where the arrested perpetrators were tried have ordered all of them to be remanded in custody.

The Guardia Civil confiscates more than 8,000 vapers and electronic cigarettes on the island of Gran Canaria

Everything that was seized did not meet the requirements of the Directorate General for Public Health.

The Tax and Border Patrol of the Guardia Civil of Santa María de Guía, in collaboration with the Tax and Border Patrol of Vecindario, as part of actions to prevent and prosecute smuggling, fraud and other illegal activities, carried out a police operation in February of this year in a wholesale store in the port area of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that was selling vapes and electronic cigarettes without complying with the requirements of manufacture, presentation and marketing, seriously endangering the health of all consumers.

The Civil Guard, in its constant search for crimes and health violations and, in this case, through the analysis of the tobacco market and related products, has found worrying indications that, both in the south of the island, particularly in the tourist areas, and in the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, there is an increase in the marketing and sale of this type of product without the necessary authorization and without complying with the requirements for manufacture, labelling and distribution established by the Ministry of Health, through the General Directorate of Public Health, thus distorting the distribution channels for safe consumption.

The Civil Guard seized more than 8,000 vaporizers and electronic cigarettes from the wholesale business. These devices violated the applicable laws in various terms, contained information in a foreign language, did not comply with the legally prescribed health regulations, were relabeled, and contained significantly more than the permitted milligrams of nicotine.

The Guardia Civil stresses that this type of item imported illegally into Spain poses a serious risk to public health.

For all these reasons, the above-described situation was reported to the General Directorate of Public Health of the Canary Islands Government.

Warning from the authorities:

Users wishing to purchase one of these products should note that all items must be written in Spanish, have a maximum nicotine content of 2 mg, a maximum number of puffs (approximately 700 puffs), a leaflet inside each item, and the inscription "This product contains nicotine, a highly addictive substance. It is not recommended for use by non-smokers." Be suspicious if the product does not contain any of these statements.

Anything that does not comply with these specifications should not be consumed due to the serious consequences it can have.

The Guardia Civil arrests a person for a public health violation on the island of Gran Canaria.

The driver of a vehicle was caught during a police check at the port of the municipality of Agaete with 103.5 grams of cocaine, 51.5 grams of amphetamines, various anabolic steroids and 625.23 euros in cash.

On 16 February 2025, the Gran Canaria Civil Guard arrested a 30-year-old man as a suspected perpetrator of a crime against public health when he was surprised by an operational unit in the port of the municipality of Agaete with 103.5 grams of cocaine, 51.5 grams of amphetamines and various anabolic steroids.

Last Sunday, February 16, the Guardia Civil conducted an operation at the entrance to the port of Agaete, Gran Canaria. During the check, officers stopped a suspicious vehicle for inspection.

When the Guardia Civil identified the occupant of the vehicle, they noticed something unusual.

A closer inspection of his clothing revealed two suspicious hidden packages.

In addition, officers discovered several anabolic steroids when checking the same person’s handbag.

The officers then examined the contents of the bags and found a pink powder in one of the bags, which was allegedly amphetamine.

The other package contained a whitish powder which the person carrying it said was cocaine.

In addition, a package containing white powder, presumably cocaine, was found in the belt bag, and another package containing the same substance was found in the vehicle in which he was traveling.

The driver of the vehicle was found to be in possession of 103.5 grams of cocaine and 51.5 grams of amphetamines. He was also found with €625.23 and three mobile phones, and officers arrested him as a suspected perpetrator of a health-related offense.

The Guardia Civil investigates a robbery involving two masked men in a hotel on Lanzarote.

The investigation began in September 2024 following the robbery of €18,750 in the early morning hours at the reception of a hotel in Playa Blanca.

During the course of the investigation, the two perpetrators were identified, tracked down and arrested, as was a third person who was arrested for receiving stolen goods.

As part of Operation AFRE, the Property and Economic Crimes Unit of the Judicial Police Unit (UOPJ) of Las Palmas

Together with the Yaiza Civil Guard, two people aged 38 and 40 were arrested for robbery with violence during a hotel robbery. A third person, aged 27, was identified for receiving stolen goods, as they were considered an associate of one of the robbers and profited from the stolen money.

The investigation began when it emerged that two masked individuals armed with a large knife had committed a robbery at the reception of a hotel in the town of Playa Blanca, stealing a total of €18,750 in notes of various denominations after threatening the hotel receptionist.

After evaluating the information received by investigators, the first perpetrator was identified and it was determined that he had fled to the island of Fuerteventura accompanied by a woman, a circumstance that led to the initiation of a search operation and his subsequent arrest.

Officers from the Las Palmas Organic Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (UOPJ), with the assistance of investigative units from Fuerteventura, entered and searched a hotel room after obtaining the appropriate judicial authorization to recover the stolen money and the items obtained with it. During the operation, and after gaining access to the room, the perpetrator was arrested and the room was searched, and the money and items related to the crime were seized.

Following this initial investigation phase, the UOPJ Las Palmas continued its investigation, which led to the acquisition of evidence of the commission of the crime of receiving stolen goods by the partner of the first detainee and the identification of the second perpetrator of the robbery, who were subsequently located and arrested on subsequent days on the island of Lanzarote, ultimately leading to the arrest of these three individuals.

14/02/2025

The Guardia Civil is investigating seven cases of robbery with violence and one case of theft and theft of a vehicle on the island of Fuerteventura.

Since one of the suspected perpetrators was familiar with the hotel facilities, he remained unnoticed.

On 6 February, the Fuerteventura Civil Guard arrested a 26-year-old woman as a suspected perpetrator of six counts of robbery with violence (burglary) and one count of theft and use of a motor vehicle, as well as a 23-year-old woman for one count of robbery with violence (burglary) committed in a hotel in Caleta de Fuste, in the municipality of Antigua.

On January 22 and 28 of this year, a multilingual former employee with in-depth knowledge of the hotel facilities, along with an accomplice, committed a number of thefts, with the alleged perpetrators' preferred prey being high-end electronic devices, personal care items, and fashion items.

The hotel's sophisticated modus operandi and insider knowledge allowed the former employee to remain undetected for several days, turning every room into a potential target, working day and night, and taking every opportunity to carry out his deeds.

They gained access to the hotel through the emergency exits, jumped over the outer wall and climbed onto the terraces of the apartments until they managed to get into some rooms.

The Guardia Civil was able to apprehend the perpetrators thanks to the public's assistance and close cooperation with the hotel owners, who provided numerous images captured by the hotel's surveillance cameras. Investigators were able to recover some of the stolen items.

The victims, whose active participation was of fundamental importance for clarifying the facts of the case, were able to recognize their items and reclaim them.

Operations “Bumba” and “Jameo”

Arrest of a person for violating the sexual freedom of two minors

This is a joint operation by the Guardia Civil of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Badajoz.

The person responsible, a resident of Alicante, had used a fake profile on social networks to gain the trust of the minors in order to obtain images of a sexual nature.

During the search of his apartment, a large amount of computer material was seized, which will be analyzed in case there are further victims.

The judicial authorities ordered him to be sent to prison.

The Guardia Civil has, as part of the operations

"Bumba" and "Jameo" arrested a resident of Alicante as a suspected perpetrator of crimes against sexual freedom.

The investigation began in April last year after the parents of two girls under the age of 14 filed a simultaneous complaint, one in the province of Badajoz and one in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

In both cases, the parents confirmed that their daughters had sent images with sexual content to an unknown adult via well-known social networks.

The investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department of Santa María de Guía in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Technical Investigation Unit of the Guardia Civil Command of Badajoz were able to identify the suspected perpetrator, a resident of Alicante.

Grooming

Person who contacted the girls under a fake profile and, after gaining their trust, persuaded them to send him pictures with intimate sexual content, insisting on the need for personal contact.

In one case, he even threatened to forward the images to all his contacts if he did not receive further messages of this kind.

Last week, in coordination with the relevant courts, a house search was carried out in Alicante, during which a large quantity of electronic equipment and computers was seized.

Based on the incriminating evidence, the alleged perpetrator was arrested and charged with crimes against sexual freedom for the sexual assaults on the two minors and referred to the judicial authorities, which ordered his detention.

Investigators do not rule out that the suspect could also be responsible for other, previously unreported crimes of a similar nature.

It reminds us of the importance of preventing and raising awareness among minors about the risks and dangers of the Internet, and of reporting such crimes.

SEPRONA (Guardia Civil) intercepts a van carrying more than a ton of hazardous waste

The van intercepted by SEPRONA in San Mateo was occupied by two people, one of whom had several arrest warrants in force from various courts in Gran Canaria.

The hazardous waste transported in the van had not been properly disposed of.

The SEPRONA of San Mateo has intensified its surveillance activities in the Barranco de Silva in Telde, in light of the serious environmental problems in this natural area, which has been converted into an illegal garbage dump.

On January 28, 2025, a van occupied by two men living in the municipality of Telde was transporting more than one ton of hazardous waste (corrugated fiber cement panels containing asbestos), distributed in a total of 42 plastic bags of rubble.

The driver and his companion were identified, and it turned out that the van driver had several arrest warrants issued against him by various courts on the island of Gran Canaria.

When inspecting the van's cargo, officers found a total of 42 bags of construction waste filled with fragments of asbestos-containing corrugated fiber cement panels, each weighing approximately 25 kg.

This waste was found in fragmented form in the construction waste bags, a practice often used in illegal material transports, and was placed in the rear of the intercepted van, which aroused the suspicion of the officers because the van had collapsed due to the heavy weight of the load.

The hazardous waste transported came from a construction site in the San Roque district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, although the exact address was unknown. The two people transporting the waste explained to officials that they had removed a roof made of "uralite" panels without the services of a company authorized to handle this type of highly hazardous waste.

For this reason, the hazardous waste found was photographed and a report was drawn up so that the person responsible for the waste could arrange for its appropriate disposal by an approved company.

Important information from us regarding waste disposal on Gran Canaria

Proper disposal of construction waste is particularly costly on Gran Canaria due to its geographical location and limited landfill capacity. Unfortunately, it's a recurring occurrence for dubious providers to illegally dump waste in the natural environment – with serious legal consequences not only for the polluters but also for the clients.

We are actively committed to sustainability and environmentally conscious construction and strongly recommend working exclusively with reputable, certified tradespeople. This way, we not only protect the environment but also protect ourselves from potential penalties.
